Most patients should have a professional cleaning and exam every six months. This interval allows us to catch cavities, gum disease, and worn or failing restorations while they're still small and easy to treat. Patients with a history of gum disease are sometimes recommended a three- to four-month interval instead.

X-rays reveal decay between teeth, below the gumline, and beneath existing restorations that are otherwise very difficult to see during a visual exam. Bitewing X-rays are typically taken once a year, while a panoramic or cone beam X-ray is usually updated every three to five years.
