Same-Day CEREC Crowns Explained

October 2, 2026  |  5 minute read  |  Reviewed by Dr. Matthew Hudzinski, DMD

A cracked tooth rarely shows up at a convenient time. The traditional fix makes it worse: impressions, a temporary crown, a two-week wait, and a second appointment.

CEREC changes that. Your crown is scanned, designed, milled, and bonded in a single visit. You leave with a permanent, natural-looking restoration the same day.

At Hudzinski Dental in Mayfield Heights, Dr. Matthew Hudzinski and Dr. Kevin Fryer place same-day crowns for patients across Cleveland's east side. Here is exactly how it works, who it is right for, and what to expect.

What Is a CEREC Crown?

CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. In plain terms, it is an in-office system that lets your dentist design and fabricate a ceramic crown while you wait, instead of sending impressions to an outside lab.

The crown itself is the same type of high-strength ceramic used in quality lab crowns. What is different is where and how fast it is made.

Why Same-Day Crowns Matter

For most busy adults, the real cost of a traditional crown is not the procedure. It is the extra time off work, the second round of numbing, and living with a temporary that can loosen or break.

  Traditional Crown Same-Day CEREC Crown
Appointments Two One
Impressions Putty trays Digital 3D scan
Temporary crown Worn for 2 to 3 weeks None
Numbing Twice Once

The CEREC Process: From Scan to Smile

Most same-day crown visits take about two hours from start to finish. Here is what happens during that time.

1. Preparing the Tooth

After the area is comfortably numb, your dentist removes decay or damaged structure and shapes the tooth so the new crown fits securely.

2. Digital Scanning

Instead of biting into impression putty, we capture your teeth with a Primescan digital scanner. A small wand creates a precise 3D model of your tooth, your bite, and the teeth around it in a few minutes. No gagging, no mess.

3. Designing Your Crown

Dr. Hudzinski or Dr. Fryer designs your crown on screen, refining its shape, contacts, and bite so it works with your natural teeth. You can see the design before it is made. The shade is matched to your surrounding teeth.

4. Milling

The finished design goes to our in-office CEREC MC XL milling unit, which carves your crown from a solid block of ceramic in about 15 minutes. Most patients relax, check email, or step out for a coffee.

5. Finishing and Bonding

The crown is characterized and polished or glazed for a natural look, then try-in checked and permanently bonded. A final bite check confirms everything feels right before you leave.

Good to know: Because your crown is designed from a digital scan rather than a putty mold, there is no distortion from shipping or setting material. That precision is a big reason same-day crowns typically need few or no adjustments.

The Benefits of CEREC Crowns

  • One visit. One appointment, one round of anesthetic, one afternoon.
  • No temporary crown. No fragile placeholder to protect for weeks, and no sensitivity from a loose temporary.
  • More comfortable. A quick digital scan replaces impression trays.
  • Natural appearance. Ceramic reflects light like enamel, with no dark metal line at the gum.
  • Strong and long-lasting. High-strength ceramic is built for daily chewing. With good care, crowns commonly last 10 to 15 years or longer.
  • Conservative. Bonded ceramic often lets us preserve more of your natural tooth.

Is a Same-Day Crown Right for You?

CEREC is an excellent fit for most single-tooth crowns, including:

  • Cracked, chipped, or broken teeth
  • Large fillings that are failing or too big to replace
  • Teeth that need a crown after a root canal
  • Replacing old or worn crowns, including metal-based ones

It is not always the right tool. Complex cases, such as full-mouth rehabilitation or certain bridges and implant restorations, can benefit from a custom lab ceramist. We will tell you honestly which approach gives you the best result, not just the fastest one.

Cost and Insurance

A same-day crown is typically priced in line with a traditional ceramic crown. Dental insurance usually covers CEREC crowns the same way it covers lab-made crowns, subject to your plan's benefits and annual maximum.

We are in network with Aetna, Delta Dental, Guardian, MetLife, and Principal, accept HSA and FSA cards, and offer financing through CareCredit. Our team will review your benefits and give you a clear estimate before treatment. See our financial information page for details.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a same-day CEREC crown appointment take?

Most CEREC crown appointments take about two hours, including preparation, digital scanning, design, about 15 minutes of milling, and final bonding. You leave with your permanent crown the same day.

Are same-day crowns as strong as traditional crowns?

Yes. CEREC crowns are milled from the same kinds of high-strength ceramic used for lab-made crowns. With good home care and regular checkups, they commonly last 10 to 15 years or longer.

Does getting a CEREC crown hurt?

The tooth is fully numbed before treatment, so most patients feel pressure rather than pain. Because there is no temporary crown and only one visit, many people find CEREC more comfortable than a traditional crown. Mild tenderness for a day or two is normal.

Does insurance cover same-day crowns?

In most cases, yes. Dental insurance generally covers a CEREC crown the same way it covers a traditional crown, based on your plan's benefits and annual maximum. Hudzinski Dental is in network with Aetna, Delta Dental, Guardian, MetLife, and Principal.

Can I eat normally after a same-day crown?

Yes. CEREC crowns are permanently bonded before you leave, so you can eat normally once the numbness wears off. There is no temporary crown to protect.
